Country Overview

Government and legal system: Côte d’Ivoire’s legal system had two primary stages of development. The first stage was the colonial period, during which the system was based on the French constitution; the second stage began during decolonization, with the adoption of an autonomous legal system. In spite of the various adaptations, this second stage of development of the legal system was marked by the renewal of the general principles governing the colonial system.
